Online Influencers

Online influencers are people who have credibility in a specific industry and post online information about the industry to a large audience. Influencers have the ability to persuade their audience to buy a product they recommend or act a certain way. These people have the power to persuade others because they have gained a substantial amount of popularity over the internet. An online influencer can be a blogger, celebrity, social media star, or online entrepreneur. Each influencer affects our society in different ways. Some online influencers have positively affected society, while others have negatively affected society.

Some online influencers have positively affected society because they raise awareness about what they are passionate about. For example, famous Tik Tok star, Charli Damelio raised awareness on Tik Tok after gaining millions of followers for her dancing videos. After going viral on the app for her dancing, Charli was able to raise awareness about Tik Tok dances, as well as social issues, such as Black Lives Matter, body shaming, and mental health. Online influencers, like Charli Damelio, are able to raise awareness about both their passions and social issues because of the large following they have.

Another way online influencers have positively affected our society is by providing free entertainment. A lot of people, including myself, follow online influencers on the social media apps, Tik Tok and YouTube, simply for entertainment. I follow multiple influencers on Tik Tok and YouTube because I enjoy watching their videos during my free time. The content influencers put out on social media is free of cost and entertaining, which is a win win situation. I always look forward to watching the entertaining video content influencers create on Tik Tok and YouTube.

Online influencers have also positively affected our society by showing us that they are normal human beings. Just because online influencers are famous and have a large following, doesn't mean that they aren't relatable. Multiple online influencers, such as celebrities, YouTubers, and Tik Tok stars post content that people can relate to. For example, YouTuber, Emma Chamberlain gained millions of subscribers on YouTube and followers on other social media platforms by simply being herself and relating to teens from all over the world. In many of her YouTube videos, Emma isn't wearing makeup, her hair is in a messy bun, and she is often wearing casual clothing. Aside from her looks, Emma showcases a different personality in her YouTube videos than other influencers. Emma's funny and quirky personality shines in all of her YouTube videos, where she talks about relatable life situations and includes weird edits, such as quick cuts, facial distortions, goofy music, and unaligned fonts. Online influencers, such as Emma Chamberlain have positively impacted our society by simply being themselves.

Unfortunately, not all online influencers have positively impacted our world. Some online influencers have negatively impacted society. For example, influencers often use their power to make people buy products they don't need. A product that a lot of influencers advertise is appetite suppressants. Celebrities, such as Kim Kardashian, Khloe Kardashian, Cardi B, Kylie Jenner, and Demi Lovato have been called out for selling these dangerous dieting products to their followers. The appetite suppressants these celebrities were trying to sell promote unhealthy dieting and weight loss.

Another way online influencers have negatively affected our society is by posting unrealistic body images.  Celebrities, such as the Kardashian-Jenner family flood people's social media feeds with unrealistic body standards that can lead their followers to develop mental health and body image issues. Most members of the Kardashian-Jenner family have unrealistic bodies because a lot of them have gotten multiple procedures done to have their bodies look the way they do today. Seeing unrealistic bodies, like the Kardashian's bodies, pressures people into thinking they must have their hour glass figures to look "attractive" in society.

Online influencers can be both positive and negative in our society. Online influencers positively affect our society because they raise awareness on their passions, provide free entertainment, and can be relatable. On the other hand, online influencers negatively affect our society by using their power to make people buy unhealthy products and posting unrealistic body images on social media. Online influencers are people who have credibility in a specific industry and impact our society in multiple ways.
